The work draws from childhood memories connected to visits to Fushimi Inari Taisha — fox imagery, vermilion gates, ritual spaces, and stories carried through memory. The gate becomes both a physical and psychological passage: a threshold between memory and imagination, the visible and invisible. The title references the traditional Japanese children's song Tōryanse; the central scroll incorporates Ah-Un (阿吽) — paired opposites, breath, beginning and ending.

境域 — The Realm
2024 · Mountain · Waterfall · Enrai · Sumi ink, Iwaenogu colors, gold on Kozo paper · 7.5" × 7.5" each
During a summer visit to Japan in 2023, I found inspiration while exploring a promenade near a mountainous hot spring ryokan where I was staying with my elderly mother. Considering her weak legs, I left her at the inn and set out on a short solo stroll — and found myself unexpectedly drawn deeper into a densely wooded path.
As I walked, the path became concealed by overgrown bushes. I pressed on, stumbling upon a small, dilapidated pavilion. Suddenly, the surroundings darkened — and upon turning around, the road I had come from had vanished amid dense vegetation. A chill ran down my spine. I realized I should not proceed further, and turned back.
Had I continued, I might have truly lost my way. I found myself pondering the phenomenon of kamikakushi — being spirited away without a trace, as if hidden by kami. The experience renewed my awe of nature's ancient, unseen presence.
Drawing from this peculiar encounter, I created this diptych after returning to the United States — using traditional Japanese techniques with ink and mineral pigments to capture the energy and aura of that liminal moment.

Inspired by the 12th-century Chōjugiga scrolls, this series imagines a world where every living creature — big and small, predator and prey — is painted with equal affection. Each of the sixteen paintings carries a seasonal or folkloric theme drawn from Japanese tradition.
Exhibited at Arc Gallery SF, San Francisco, 2021. Presented alongside an art and music video collaboration with musician Sizzle Ohtaka (おおたか静流).

A set of twenty-eight calligraphies exploring the Zen concept of Tenchi Dōkon (天地同根) — "heaven and earth share the same root." Each piece renders a single character in sumi ink on India paper: words that move from the cosmic (Time, Death, Firmament, Eternal) through the natural (Root, Fire, Earth, Wind) to the human (Resonate, Letter, Person, Mixture) — tracing the one thread that runs through all.
A multi-site installation presented in various environments since 2016. Red cotton cord — each length approximately thirty feet, with five to ten lengths used at a time — carries fragments of paper accumulated through the act of making: studies, practice, trial and error, the traces of doubt and discovery that build toward a finished work. Suspended in space, these fragments shift with air, light, and movement, making the quiet process of attention visible. The installation responds to the architecture and atmosphere of each space and continues to grow.
